When I first started a model team 3 years ago, I thought about what I wanted my model team to be. What was my "why"? Most model rep teams are just about getting pretty pictures. But I wanted more, so I developed this mission statement:
The Power Team is for high school senior girls, and is all about community, friendships, and empowerment.

The Power Team was chosen as one of the national Impact Teams for Inspiring Teens Magazine. The Impact Teams are focused on improving our community through service projects and blessing others with our efforts and our time. With my Power Team '22, we've already done 3 service projects this year with more to come!

It is my hope for the girls on the Power Team to build on friendships they already have within the Power Team, and to form new ones as well. It's fun to join the Power Team with a friend, but it's also fun to get to know other girls on the team that may be from other schools. This year, the girls from several different schools within Klein ISD, but also from Oak Ridge and Cy-Fair school districts. Seeing the girls all support each other makes my heart happy!

The empowerment aspect of my team comes through all of the opportunities that I offer the girls to participate in. These girls are BUSY, so I realize they may not be able to attend everything I plan. I appreciate the time they are able to devote to these opportunities that help them grow their confidence and their sense of empowerment. We recently had a "power event" at my house where our guest speaker (Caroline Powell, owner of the adorable Tumbleweeds and Notions shop in The Woodlands), stressed the importance of taking calculated risks in life as well as the significance of networking and relationships. These are definitely valuable life lessons!
Continuing to build on the empowerment element of our program, the girls and I went to a self defense class hosted by Jimmy and Hope Holmes of Global Martial Arts. This is the third year that I've partnered with Global Martial Arts for this class, and each year I continue to be impressed. Jimmy and Hope (husband and wife) teach the girls valuable tips about safety in a no-holds-barred conversation. In addition, the girls are taught life saving defense skills. They get to practice those kicks and moves in the studio while Jimmy and Hope walk around helping and correcting forms and techniques. I truly hope that none of these girls will ever need to use these skills in a life saving situation, but I'm really glad that they have the knowledge and skills in case they do need to use them.
This is first post and blog that I've ever posted with just i-phone pictures, but that shows how much this event means to me. Although the girls and I definitely love all the pretty pictures, I'm so glad that my team is about much more than that!
